Artist Profile: The Killers

Influenced by many of the bands of the 80’s, The Killers, started in 2001, have already sold 15 million discs worldwide (5 million in the states). Led by Brandon Flowers (who has his own solo disc out now), The band drew the attention of music fans with their distinctive and hard driving rock sound. A new Killers disc may be forthcoming in 2012.

Comment on Movies on AS!

Seeing a movie this week? Comment on the movies you’ve seen and even introduce new movies we  haven’t heard of in AS!

This Week’s Movies

“Life As We Know It” with Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel.  Katherine and Josh wind up becoming instant parents when their mutual friends die and leaves their kid with them. This sounds like a plot to a damn 80’s or 90’s tv sitcom. Heigl could make this work, but so far, she’s peaked at “Knocked Up” and “27 Dresses.”

“Secretariat” A story about a racehorse. With Diane Lane.

“My Soul To Take” Shit! Another cheap horror movie, this time with a serial killer taking out kids on their birthday. From horror king Wes Craven.

“Stone” With Edward Norton as an arsonist who uses his wife to bonk the parole officer to be freed from prison.

All and all, a lame week at the movies, at least for the new!

Music Monday: The 10/4 Playlist

The White Stripes: Seven Nation Army (Best brother and sister act in the business)

The Ghetto Boys: Mind  Playing Tricks On Me (These guys are no joke! Real deal hip-hop)

Filter: Take A Picture (From 1999. I’ll let you figure out what that “Hey Dad…” lyric means!)

The Bloodhound Gang: The Bad Touch (Weird ass video, funny lyrics, funky beat!)

Cocteau Twins: Heaven Or Las Vegas (The last great song they ever made.)

The Jam: A Town Called Malice (The Motown influence is obvious. Excellent track)

Music Monday: Out Tuesday

K.T. Tunstall (Whoo Hoo!)  – Tiger Suit

Bruno Mars : Doo Wops and Hooligans

David Archuletta: The Other Side of Down

Faith Evans: Something About Faith (her first disc in awhile)

Waka Flocka Flame: Flockavelli

John Lennon: Power To The People: The Hits (plus a few remasters of his previous discs will be released)

Stephen J Cannell Dies

Cannell created such shows as “The A Team”, “The Greatest American Hero” and “The Rockford Files.” He also became a novelist, spinning out several hit titles including “The Plan”. Cannell died from Melanoma.

Movie Update:Old Media Meets New Media, Tops Box Office!

1. The Social Network – Makes $23 million in it’s first week. With tens of millions of Facebook users out there, the numbers were on “Network’s” side anyway. BTW, Facebook creator Mark Zuckerburg appeared on “The Simpsons” this Sunday.
2. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole (What exactly is this movie about? Anybody seen it?)
3. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (Last week’s top film)
4. The Town
5. Easy A
6. You Again
7. Case 39
8. Let Me In
9. Devil (Another cheap ass thriller movie ending up where it belongs…in the bottom of the rankings.)
10. Alpha and Omega

Artist Profile: Swing Out Sister

Known for their 1987 top ten hit “Breakout”, Swing Out Sister these days seem to be more popular in Japan than in the United States. The band is still together today, but they perform as a duo of Colleen Drewery and Andy Connell. Martin Jackson left shortly after the success of their debut album “It’s Better to Travel”. The group transistioned from pop music to acid and smooth jazz, and while they are mostly known for that one hit in the US, the band continues to shine in Japan and Asia, where they continue to tour.

Two Movies: Your Take

I am interested in your opinions about two new movies that are out in theaters this weekend. “The Social Network” appears to be a huge new movie, at least with critics. It got a 97% in Rotten Tomatoes, but it’s to early to see whether or not this was a smash. Even if it is a movie about a  certain very heavily used social networking site.

Another movie I would like your opinions on is the recently released “I’m Still Here” with Joaquin Phoenix quitting his successful acting career to be a hip hop star. A limited run film that got little attention. I wouldn’t have known about it myself if not for a friend cluing  me in on it. If you have seen any of these flicks, comment about it here.
